If you are missing a tooth and want to replace it with something that feels, looks and functions like a natural tooth then a dental implant is the best choice.
Alternatives to a dental implant are dental bridges and partial dentures.
A partial denture comes in and out of the mouth and clasps onto the teeth next to the missing tooth. The dental partial gets food caught under it when you eat and is a pain to keep clean. It also covers part of your soft tissue and is bulky and uncomfortable and causes a change in taste and possibly speech
A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth by carving healthy teeth down on both sides of the missing tooth space. The carved down teeth are crowned with an artificial tooth incorporated into the crowns. Dental bridges are hard to floss and keep clean. The teeth that were carved are often weakened and may lead to more loss of teeth. The average life of a dental bridge is about 10 years.
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is gently placed into the jaw bone. This process is done under local anesthetic and with almost no pain during and after insertion. The screw heals for 1-2 months then a crown is added into the implant screw and you have a beautiful tooth.
If a tooth has to be removed we can place the implant at the same time as the tooth removal resulting in a faster healing time and an easier outcome.
